Laboratory Technician

Position: Laboratory Technician

Reports to: Laboratory Manager

Duty station: Hope Missionary Hospital

Location: Panyangasi- Rubongi, Tororo  

Department: Clinical Laboratory


As a Laboratory Technician you will play a vital role in the delivery of high-quality patient care by performing various laboratory tests and procedures. Working closely with medical technologists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals, you will contribute to accurate and timely diagnosis and treatment of patients. This position requires meticulous attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and excellent communication skills.


  • Degree or Diploma in medical laboratory technology.
  • Two (2) years of working experience in a clinical laboratory or healthcare setting is desirable.
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment, instruments, and procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in performing tests and recording data.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to patient confidentiality, safety, and quality care.
  • Must have a valid practicing license in Medical Lab.


  • Collect various types of specimen’s blood, urine, tissue samples from patients according to established protocols.
  • Properly label, transport, and store specimens to maintain sample integrity.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis by performing centrifugation, separation, and other processing techniques as required.
  • Conduct routine diagnostic tests using automated equipment and manual methods.
  • Perform tests such as complete blood counts (CBCs), blood chemistry analyses, urinalysis, and microbiological cultures.
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and quality control protocols to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
  • Perform regular maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
  • Document equipment maintenance activities and report any issues to the appropriate personnel.
  • Record test results accurately and enter them into the laboratory information system (LIS).
  • Maintain comprehensive and organized laboratory records, including patient information, test results, and quality control data.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities, including proficiency testing, internal audits, and adherence to regulatory standards.
  • Follow safety protocols and ensure compliance with infection control measures.
  • Communicate effectively with healthcare team members regarding test results, specimen requirements, and other relevant information.
  • Collaborate with medical technologists, pathologists, and clinicians to troubleshoot issues and optimize laboratory processes.
  • Stay informed about advances in laboratory technology, techniques, and regulations through continuing education and training opportunities.
  • Seek opportunities for professional growth and skill development within the laboratory setting.
  • Any other duties will be assigned from time to time.


  • Be familiar with the inventory processes for equipment on the unit and check equipment as assigned.
  • Be familiar with ISO standards.


  • Critical thinking, insight and good decision making in view of nature and needs of the unit.
