She’s a Hero

The hand that rocks the cradle is
the hand that rules the world.

– William Ross Wallace

In 2019, Jungle Medical Missions initiated a two-dimensional maternal child health program. “She’s a Hero” (Omukyala Muzira) is purposed to support underprivileged mothers throughout antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care to mitigate the 3 delays and thereby reduce the Maternal Mortality rate in Uganda.

We work with the local community leaders who help us to identify those in dire need and our team conducts random home visits to assess the livelihood of potential beneficiaries. Potential beneficiaries must be in the lowest household wealth quantile as stipulated by the national demographic and health survey, 2016.

We pay special attention to victims of rape, defilement and domestic violence. Once recruited, we provide all the medical support throughout pregnancy and for the new-born till 6 weeks when they receive the second routine immunization.

Program Implementation

We achieve this through partnerships with health centres where our mothers have easy access.

Mothers Receive;

  • Free Antenatal
  • Intra & Postpartum care
  • Free Mama Kit

The Mama Kit which includes essential supplies (sterile gloves, gauze, cotton, plastic sheet, scissors, cord clamps, sutures, baby receiver sheets, and a pack of baby diapers) whose absence could lead to a delay to institute care once the mother is in labour and has arrived at a health facility or en-route.

As of today, 10 mothers have successfully completed our ‘‘She’s a hero” program and we have 50 in our care. Secondly, we conduct reproductive health education for teenagers and adult women of childbearing age. We also provide the full range of contraception services for these girls and women. Our trainings empower the girls/women and implore the boys/men to support their female counterparts accordingly.
